Yes, you are forced to take Econometrics that appears useless to you at the moment. You can never imagine that you will ever use what you learn from the course. No matter how hard the professor tries to show you the importance of doing the course, you are just not convinced. Lacking the motivation to learn, you are almost guaranteed to learn little from the course.
If you are attacked by that thought, think again!! Something that you consider useless today can become very useful later in life. I know you are still not convinced. Look at the following email I recently received from a former student who just happened to find what he learned from Econometrics useful in his job.

Greetings! This is Jason Cheng, a graduate of class 2014 in HKU E&F. I hope this email finds you doing well and that you are still enjoying teaching in HKU as you did with me with your smiley face.
It's been a bit of time since our encounters, which were Econ1001 and Econometric back in HKU. The motivation of this thank you letter is less on the course content that you delivered but rather the 5 mins chat you had with me while we walked out of CYM to KKL. After having a 9:30am Econometric class during which I was struggling with the content as usual, I ran to you and asked you a few questions as we walked to your office. Understanding my frustration originated from the fact that I did not find the content "useful" to my future career, hence I wasn't motivated to learn much, you told me this,
(something like this lar, you know it's been 2 years...)
"often times we were too early in identifying what are "useful" and what are not once we are exposed to new ideas. But life is just unpredictable (sarcastic enough when econometric is about forecasting the future). You may find once "useless" stuffs be "useful" in surprises. Yes, Econometric seems useless if you are not pursuing a economics related career. But who knows?"
And yes, today, I am now finding these forecasting models extremely useful in my job in a way that i never imagined. I'm now an enterprise software sales specializing in analytic solutions (it was a surprise to myself that i'm doing sales job too). the basic understanding of these models empower the conversation between me and my clients--- the knowledge is so important in my job that I need to look up wikipedia to complement!
Please accept my sincere gratitude to your effort in taking one step further to inspire me to learn rather than simply answering my questions on theory. I wish I did seize the opportunities to exchange ideas with more professors when I was in HKU. it's such a beautiful place.
